The priority is not documentation, routine reassessment in an hour, or teaching about antibiotics. The nurse must stop exposure to the medication, assess and support airway, breathing and circulation, call for help and prepare prescribed or protocol-based treatment.

Some medication classes appear frequently because they connect directly to patient safety. Anticoagulants test bleeding risk and teaching. Insulin tests hypoglycemia, timing and recognition of dangerous glucose changes. Cardiac medications test pulse, blood pressure, potassium, renal function and dysrhythmia risk. Antibiotics test allergy, culture collection, superinfection and patient response.
Do not study these as separate flashcard islands. Link each class to a patient picture. What would you see if the drug works? What would you see if it harms the patient? What would you check before giving it? What would you teach before discharge?
