Definition
ABCs means airway, breathing and circulation. It is a prioritization framework used to identify immediate threats to oxygenation and perfusion.
Why it matters for NCLEX
NCLEX priority questions often include several important findings. ABCs help students identify which finding may harm the patient fastest, especially when airway swelling, respiratory distress, severe bleeding or shock is present.
Clinical example
A patient with throat tightness, wheezing and hypotension after a medication needs immediate attention because airway and circulation are at risk.
