Sepsis is a life-threatening response to infection that can lead to poor perfusion, organ dysfunction and shock.
Why it matters for NCLEX
NCLEX clinical judgment scenarios may show sepsis through trends: fever or hypothermia, tachycardia, low blood pressure, confusion, increased respiratory rate, low urine output and worsening lab values.
Clinical example
An older adult with pneumonia becomes confused, tachycardic and hypotensive with decreasing urine output. These cues should raise concern for deterioration.
